This preliminary artwork is very similar to the final piece that featured in a story called "Object" written and illustrated by Mike Hinge published in "Heavy Metal" Sept/1982.

UPDATE: 04/02/2011 - I now know that the G.I Joe images were actually used by Hasbro Toys circa 1977. G.I Joe was now renamed Super Joe and Mike produced at least 11 colour paintings for the packaging.

Mike Hinge - Sign - Interstate USA Freeway Construction. White heavy board with stencilled enamel paint? Approximate size 40x50cm. Date unknown. Bottom right hand corner Mike Hinge is written in block capitols.

This piece is so different to what I have seen of Mike Hinge's other work, it looks a bit European (except for the Fact it has USA written in large letters) it reminds me of Peter Saville's work for the New Order album Movement 1981 or more correctly Fortunato Depero's poster 1932.

Does anyone know if this sign ever got used?
