Mike Hinge 093

Mike Hinge - Hung On You (4). Colour pen on thin paper. Approximate size 35x43cm. Date: Unknown. Signed.

This is the final image, redrawn, traced from the reduced print and coloured. There are some small differences the most noticeable is the choice to break the border where the lady's hair ribbon flows from the picture.

The question is who was the picture for and was it used?

"Hung On You" was in the late 60's a psychedelic fashion boutique on Kings Road in London England and where there was also a fashion boutique called "Granny takes a Trip" that was at number 488 Kings Road (mostly associated with the English artists "Michael English and "Nigel Waymouth". I also found a remote reference to Coca Cola and "Hung On You" on the web, from a magazine from 1967 called "Boys Life" it has a Coca-Cola advert that has an article on a band called The Fortunes in this article the band visits "Hung On You" where they try on some clothes and drink Coca-Cola.

  1. Free space on the bottom left suggest that it is free for some text. So, if it is not just an excercise of ideas, it may be either for advertisement or an illustration for a magazine (published or not). "Hunc on you" is drawn in bold lines unlike other words, so it must have been center of attention.
Note that after first pic G in "hung" becomes C, and Cola is just Cola, not Coca- or Coke - maybe it was to go around some copyrights? So, my guess, if it was supposed to be commercial work, it was for poster of a nightclub party or page in the magazine article.

  2. Thanks pinwizz,
As usual you're spot on and pointed out things that I had missed. You're definitely right about the free space on the bottom left suggesting that it is free for some text. And I agree that it's either an advertisement or an illustration for a magazine or perhaps a nightclub... Yes I thought it odd that in the first picture the G was quite clear then the following pictures seemed more like a C. The Coca-Cola abbreviation is something that I hadn't thought of either.

    All the best

  4. Thanks for your interest. I have been really fortunate and I have collected some pieces from ebay but the majority from private sellers. Do you have any Mike Hinge pieces? I am always interested in finding more of his work.

    All the best

    Ivan.
