Mike Hinge 108
Mike Hinge - Penny's 2 Big Days - Rain Or Shine Values. Large printed advert on blue paper. Approximate size 60x70cm. Date: November 1960. Unsigned.
This is second of two large adverts printed on blue paper.
Ever since I expressed opinion that Hinge never learned to draw humans properly (under that bizarre Weird Tales cover), I constantly rethink it. Even with the aid of photograph or model it's very hard to draw them well without prior study.
And these are very good, standing somewhere on Bob Peak territory if such comparison is appropriate.
Cheers Pinwizz I wonder how much time Mike took over these illustrations they look deceptively simple? Like you say they are very good and I like the reference to Bob Peak (same era as well). There is quite a lot of Hinge style in the drawings but also wonder if there was an in-house style that he might have had to follow?
I'd imagine that individual drawings were done relatively fast (like not more than half a hour), but there may have been several takes to warm up and then best ones selected. But this is all speculation.

All the best

ReplyDeleteThanks Pinwizz
ReplyDeleteYes I can imagine that and go along with your idea.
All the best
